Muhammadu Buhari: The Imperial President

Pres. Buhari
On the 29th of May, Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in as the president of Nigeria. On that day, the President's inaugural speech informed those who could read between the lines that Buhari is going to be an Imperial President.

Apart from his compliments to Goodluck Jonathan in respect of the manner in which he conceded defeat; APC, the Political Party that brought Buhari to power was never mentioned in his speech. That says a lot about the mind of the man.

However, Buhari was at his arrogance best when he made his now famous statement; “I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody”.

Obviously, ‘I belong to nobody’ was a coded message to Bola Tinubu. That was a clear sign that Buhari has used Tinubu to gain power and he’s about to dump him. Well, Tinubu is good in using and dumping people; a taste of his own poison.

Besides, in pursuit of greed, these politicians do forget the fundamental rules of power; you don’t give power to a man because he will use it against you, according to Machiavelli.

The second message was to Olusegun Obasanjo; the old man that likes throwing tantrums when things don’t go his way.

According to Buhari, after the selfless leadership of Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo and Ahmadu Bello etc.; “some of their successors behaved like spoilt children breaking everything and bringing disorder to the house”.

As a matter of fact, Buhari’s statement was a good description of Obasanjo’s behaviour. Especially the attitude Obasanjo exhibited when he was supervising the tearing of his PDP membership card. More so, Obasanjo destroyed PDP because he couldn’t control Jonathan.

From Buhari’s statement, I believe Obasanjo, by now, knows exactly where his think-tank’s report to Buhari is? Of course in the thrash can.

Moreover, no matter how hard Obasanjo tries to exonerate himself from the rotten state of Nigeria, Buhari kept reminding him of 16 years PDP misrule of Nigeria.

I am sure, Buhari is also indirectly telling all those politicians who defected from PDP to APC that they are part of Nigeria woes, irrespective of the party they belong to now.

In addition, Buhari reminded Obasanjo that since 1999, the PDP government has spent over $20 billion dollars on Power generation and yet there is no electricity in Nigeria.

In fact, every Nigerian heard when the National Assembly wanted to probe Obasanjo’s regime regarding the $16 billion he reportedly spent on power generation. Mysteriously, the probe died till today.

Finally, Friday will make it a week since Buhari was sworn in as President and not even a secretary to the Federal Government has been appointed. Is the President going to administer the country alone?

All the same, His Imperial Excellency shouldn’t be under any illusion that the Jagaban of Lagos will not react.

  1. I reserve my opinion (will hold my tongue) until 100 days have passed. I have faith in the new president. Although, I admit, your observations are interesting.
